On Sunday, the eldest child and I went to a 7 eleven. The eldest child had a 5-day school trip coming up and was allowed to go get snacks. I have never been to a 7 eleven in any country so I was very curious. All I know is that it’s a global grocery chain founded in Texas, USA.
We walked in. Overall the store looks very much like any small grocery store in Finland, like R-Kioski for example. At the front of the store though, people were sitting down and eating. From what I know, this is very common in Asia. Customers are able to prepare some simple foods in the store after purchasing them. Many grocery stores have kettles and/or microwaves.
The eldest child chose some candy and snacks that I know and have had in Finland, such as these watermelon bubblegum candies. I was somewhat surprised to the collection of western candy and food that they had, the products weren’t the original brands though but a Chinese or a Japanese brand.
On the cold beverages section, I found orange juice with a person’s face on it. This particular person is an actor Dylan Wang who I recognize from Netflix’s ‘The Rational Life’ and ‘Meteor Garden’.
It is common to see idols, actors, and other celebrities faces printed on food packaging and daily goods in China as a marketing tactic.
A good selection of Pocky was found in 7 eleven. In Finland, the price of one Pocky package (45g) is €2.20 – €3.00. You can buy one Pocky package at 7 eleven in China for ¥13.50 (yuan), which is €1.75.
I had to get a new flavor that I haven’t tried before – green tea ice cream. I haven’t yet tasted it but I’m very excited about it.
